If you add the bar and skirt kits they waste very little. We've got some, not sure what brand but I think cattle waste more hay with the plastic than metal. Ours are I think 4 inch pvc fairly heavy I think sch 40 thickness. Keep in mind we feed very little hay in feeders except in a lot or maybe for supplement of cover crops. One thing I like about them they are easier to raise up out of old hay. One even flew 1/2 mile in a tornado got it out of a tree and it is still here used a bit.
